This conversation was not so easy. Not for me, but I don't think it was for my guest either: Fawzy El Emrany. Fawzy is a Palestinian painter born in the Gaza Strip. He had planned to show his children Palestine and his grandparents for the first time at the beginning of October last year and had planned the trip. And then Hamas arrived.

The conversation wasn't easy for me because I wasn't sure what I could ask him without triggering trauma. Of course, the conversation wasn't easy for Fawzy either. 26 years of being marked and traumatised by war has left its mark.

We can see these traces of the war he experienced in his pictures. His pictures don't overwhelm us, he doesn't beat us over the head with brutality, he doesn't force the suffering on us. We only recognise the war in his paintings when we look at his work. For example, he paints a picture of oranges lying on a table. Oranges that were plentiful in his childhood but have long since disappeared, displaced by the war in his country.
